What is KanTalk?

KanTalk is a learning and social community to practice spoken English. As a member, you can connect with many other learners and teachers through Skype, text message, group and email. You can also find partners for language exchange in this growing social network.

Why should I join KanTalk?

Speaking a second language is a fulfilling experience. But it's always hard to achieve. We make it easy to practice spoken English. Using our conversation topics as guide, you can practice with others at ease; through YouTube video transcribing, you can improve your listening comprehension; through easy recording, you can receive feedback about your accent and pronunciation.

My spoken English is poor. I'm not ready to talk yet, can I still join KanTalk?

Dont worry. Every learner has gone through this stage of discomfort. Take your time. Start from where you are, connect with those who are patient and encouraging, join in group conversations to get a feel. Over time, you will build up your confidence as well as your skill.

Only talking to native speakers can improve my spoken English, right?

Engaging native speakers no doubt helps a lot. But you can also benefit tremendously from other learners, particularly those whose proficiency level is slightly above yours, and who are equally motivated to learn.

How do I become a member of KanTalk?

Go to the Register page to sign up. We will send you an email to confirm. Click on the verification link in the email to verify your email address. A valid email address is needed for connecting with other members.

Is KanTalk free?

Yes, KanTalk is free.

FunTalk Topic

What is FunTalk Topic?

FunTalk Topic includes a set of spoken English topics. Each topic is freshly designed with a YouTube video, a picture, a set of questions, and a list of vocabulary and idiom. Each topic focuses on one specific topic, ranging from social life, business, to entertainment.

How can I use FunTalk Topic?

When you practice spoken English with someone, FunTalk Topic can be a great help. Each topic offers you interesting visual and text material to stimulate your conversation. It makes practice fun and easy. We'll add fresh topics each week. You'll never run out of topics. You can also use each topic for self-study.

Can I create my own FunTalk Topic?

Absolutely. We designed a simple template for you to create and submit your own topic. Once you have all the contents ready, such as YouTube video clip, a picture and text, it only takes a minute to get it on KanTalk. Finding all the contents for a topic takes some efforts, but it's a rewarding experience for learning and sharing.

How to record myself reading a text online at Kantalk?

On Record page, simply click "Record" button. An Adobe Flash Player Setting window will pop up with this message: "Camera and Microphone Access: Kantalk.com is requesting access to your camera and microphone. If you click Allow, you will be recorded". Click Allow. To start recording, click the red Record button. When you finish, click Stop. To playback what you recorded, click Play button. If not satisfied, you can start over again. The new recording will automatically overwrite the exsiting one.

How long am I allowed to record?

We currently limit each recording to two-minute long.

How many recordings is allowed per user?

We currently limit one recording per user under the Recording menu. However, you can also record a self-introduction on your Profile page. We plan to allow multiple recordings in the future.

What if I want to rerecord?

Simply start to record again. Once done, it will automatically overwrite the existing recording.

Why there is no sound in my recording?

Make sure your microphone is connected and that you click 'Allow' when asked whether to allow kantalk.com to access your microphone. Also, click Settings under the Record (Rec) button to adjust the recording volume.

How do I save my recording?

After you finish the recording, click the Stop button. The recording is automatically saved.

I've heard my voice at Record page after first recording it, but couldn't find my recording listed in the Browse page. Was it saved?

When you clicked Stop button after finishing your recording, it would be automatically saved into the database. Occasionally, however, it wasn't saved for various reasons. Please try it again at a different time. If the problem still exists after a few tries, please report it to us on Feedback page.

Video and Transcript

After I submit a video, who can transcribe it?

You or any registered user can. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. You may get feedback from others. It's an excellent way to improve you listening comprehension.

Can I submit a video from any other sites than YouTube?

At this stage, no. There are so much fun stuff in YouTube. We are sure you will find something there you'd like to share at KanTalk.

How many video can I submit?

As many as you want. Just make sure they are fun to watch.

Your Profile

How do I upload my picture and audio file?

On Profile page, browse and select a picture and an MP3 audio file for upload. At this time, we allow one picture and one audio file in every user profile. You can update them as often as you want.

How do I record an audio self-introduction?

It's easy with our Recording tool. On Profile page Picture and Voice tab, click Record button to record a self-introduction and click Stop when you are done recording. You can record up to two minutes. Most users prefer to hear a shorter introduction to get to know you better.

What is my privacy setting for the information I filled out in my Profile page?

Your email address (used as your KanTalk username) is always kept confidential. Your Skype username is public to KanTalk members only. You can also choose not to reveal your age. We dont ask your phone number.

What should I enter in the Describe Me section?

Anything you feel comfortable to tell. It's a good idea to share your interests, hobbies, and favorite movies/music/books here. The more others know about you, the better chance the right people will connect with you and add you to their Friend list.

How to turn on Skype Web so other Kantalkers can see my Skype status?

If your Skype status shows like this ? on Kantalk but you would like other web users to see your Skype status, please first check if your Skype username is entered correctly in your profile. Then check whether you enabled Skype Web. Skype Web, by default, is off. This is to protect users from having their online status published on the web until they explicitly opt in to do so. By changing your Privacy Options you are essentially publishing your Skype online status onto the web and all Internet users can see it.

To turn on SkypeWeb, in Skype, select Tools -> Options -> Privacy, and tick the box "Allow my status to be shown on the web".

Your Account

How do I add a member to my Friends list?

You can either Browse the members or Search for them. Click "Add to My Friend" to add a member to your friend list. We'll send an email to notify him or her. If accepted, he or she will appear in your Friend list. If the person you want to add is not a member yet, send him or her an Invitation to join KanTalk first.

How do I invite friends and classmates to join KanTalk?

At the Invite page, fill out your friends' email address, and click Send. A message will be sent to them. They can follow the link in the email and register at KanTalk's homepage. After signing in, they automatically appear on your Friend list.

What is my status?

There are two statuses: your online status at KanTalk.com and your status in Skype. At KanTalk, your online status is Online once you sign in. At Skype, you need to change your privacy setting in order to show your online status. Please follow the instruction at Skype.

I have not received the verification email from KanTalk. What's wrong?

Check the spam (or junk) folder in your email box; it could be sitting there. If it's still not there, log onto KantTalk, go to Account page and generate another verification email.

How do I change my setting for receiving email notication from Kantalk??

If you don't want to receive the email notice from Kantalk for new message to you, new comment on your profile or your recording, go to Account page and uncheck the boxes.

How do I change my Daylight Saving Time status?

To make sure your Daylight Saving Time status is accurate, go to Account page and check/uncheck the box.

I forgot my password.

You can click Forget Your Password link at the homepage to reset your password.

How do I change my login user ID?

Your login user ID is the email address that you provided at registration. You can change it to another valid email address on the Account page. A confirmation email will be sent to you.

How do I deactivate my account?

Are you sure you are fluent with your spoken language already? OK, you can go to the Account page and click the cancellation link at the bottom.

How do I report an abuse?

You can report an abuse by sending an email to privacy@kantalk.com. Please include the abuser's user name and other details.
