I visited the Middle Eastern nation of Qutar, which is an Islamic state and one of the wealthiest nations in the world.Much of the London stock exchange has been bought by Quatarian money obtained through its rich gas reserves.
It is estimated that in 4 years time, Qatarian people could be the richest in the world.
And it’s recently declared by Transparency International as the least corrupt nation in the Middle East.
But what does this mean? The nation is the peninsula from Saudi Arabia, a small land mass consisting predominantly of uninhabited desert , fit only for camels and extreme motorists, surrounded by the warm Indian Ocean, the original source of all revenues for Qatarians, and an important part of their historical culture, along with the religion of Islam, as these artefacts from the Islamic museum in Doha show you.
The soukhs, are lively places of socializing trade and music, if you can call it that.
Since Roman times, Qatar has acquired all its revenues from pearl fishing and dried fish. The warm seas are home to a large variety of marine life, all of which are available at the market.
Along with alive birds, which are kept as pets, the well-being animals is by no means a priority for this culture.
The remnants of Qatar's nautical past are visible all round the bustling, modern city of Doha.
Commercial Western culture is embraced here. was a culture in BRISTI. You can find Venetian gondolas alongside the traditional whirling Derviches in this shopping mall.
The nation's extreme wealth and power is entirely due to their ability to harness the natural energy resources of the land, a
huge amount of natural gas, which also makes Qatar a popular destination for Western businesses.
Smart Global productions have recently documented a PR scandal by an energy company named RasGas, which is the fifth largest enterprise in the world, and also heartily endorsed by the nation's ruler. These girls were sponsored by RasGas to visit England, and learn our culture, history and language. In return, they support the energy companies, who essentially run their nation.
Companies like RasGas benefit enormously from the support of the ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and his family. His picture can be seen in every establishment in Doha. He is something of a hero among the native patriots, who pay no tax but receive housing benefits, free healthcare and education. But beneath the surface lies discontent, labourers from India, Bangladesh and the Philipinnes are often forced to live in far more squalid conditions.
The Americans champion the nation as an example of democracy in the Middle East, but despite the fact that the Emir has allowed parliamentary elections in which even women can vote, he will not allow his own position to be jeopardized by democratic processes and arrests those who even speak of
a coup, like the one he instigated to take control of the nation away from his father. Will this so-called democracy be liberal enough to cope with the inevitable cultural revolution that international business brings to a nation ? Torn between its loyalty to neighbouring nations Iran and Irak and between its business relationships with Britain and America, Qatar may become increasingly vulnerable politically.
