Creating is what humans do best. But lately, we’ve learned about how to create a bit too much. And until now, we haven’t been very creative about getting rid of all these stuff.
Our throw-away culture is so in-green. The poisoning stuff gets into everything. You know the switch they control like the light in the trunk in your car. Well that’s made with mercury. Mercury causes brain damage. Those little mercury switches make car cycling much more difficult and toxic than it needs to be.
Like many things they’re created without considering their eventual demise. To address this issue in my neighbourhood .we’re pushing for a large-scale eco-industrial park that will use recyclables? from the city's waste stream as raw materials. employ hundreds of people and use barge and rail access instead of trucks to transport goods. Sounds like a great plan, right?
Well, not to city hall.
They’re attempting to build 2000 inmate jail on the same piece of land. Well, we’re now working to convince them that the best alternative to incarceration is a decent job. Even better, a green job.
We’re also open up a fab lab this year. Then what’s a fab lab? Fab lab is short for fabrication laboratory. It’s an MIT initiative that links personal computers, software and machines like laser cutters and mailing equipment allowing you to create almost anything.
We’re working to provide our community with creative and entrepreneurial? ways to cross the digital divide. We’re hoping to use recycled materials as raw materials for the new products there too.
We hope they’re a new generation of south Bronx creators. It is the birthplace of hip hop after all. We’ll figure out a way to turn trash to treasure here at home and create new jobs.
And I’d love to hear of new ways you all are doing this in your hometown. Who knows? Maybe you’ll on the green.
