Of all the sounds created by the human being, the sound of the flute is the purest. The clarity of the notes it produces is for me an ideal voicing of the natural simplicity all music is forever striving to achieve. The flute has the extraordinary capacity to transport us into realms unsullied by strife or anger- the mood the flute evokes for me is one of yearning, of philosophical regret, but it is a regret purified of bitterness. No wonder Hippocrates counselled the sounds of a shepherd's flute in convalescence to heal body and mind. (Yehudi Menuhin)
